Commenting on the Government's plans to overhaul the benefits system and create greater incentives for work, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee for Work and Pensions, Jenny Willott said:

"Liberal Democrats can be proud of our role in securing these new reforms which will finally put an end to the ridiculous situation where for many people it pays more to be on benefits than in work.

"After 13 years, Labour left us with a messy, over-complicated system that trapped people in poverty. Their refusal to reform meant they failed some of the most vulnerable people in society.

"Today's announcement ensures that people who take part time work do not lose their benefits and that every hour worked means money in your pocket.

"This would not have been possible had it not been for the support for reform from Nick Clegg and Liberal Democrats in Government."
