Euro MP pledges to keep up pressure for peace after meeting World Churches Council campaigner

March 30, 2011 4:21 PM

West Midlands region Lib Dem MEP Liz Lynne has pledged to keep up the pressure for an Israel/Palestine settlement after meeting World Churches Council peace campaigner and Ledbury resident Stanley Rowe in Brussels

Stanley Rowe recently visited the European Parliament after returning from 3 months on a mission to East Jerusalem and the West Bank as part of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme initiative run by the World Churches Council.

Mr Rowe, who is also an active member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, updated the county's Lib Dem MEP on the continued problems he had witnessed in East Jerusalem caused by attempts to build new illegal Israeli settlements and to force Palestinians out of their homes in their part of the city.

After the meeting Liz Lynne said:

"I was delighted to be able to welcome local peace campaigner Stanley Rowe to the European Parliament and hear his fascinating account of the three months he spent in East Jerusalem.

"It was shocking to hear his first hand testimony of continuing mistreatment and human rights abuses.

"I have suggested Stanley and I work closely together on a parliamentary question to raise some of his concerns with the EU authorities.

"As a member of the European Parliament's Palestinian delegation I and many MEPs from different parties continue to work hard for the EU to push for a peace settlement."

A long time campaigner on human rights issues, Liz Lynne is a member of the Delegation for Relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council in the European Parliament. She has repeatedly called for an end to the Gaza blockade and for proactive EU efforts to encourage Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table.

Ledbury resident and peace campaigner Stanley Rowe commented;

"I had a very good meeting with Liz Lynne who was very interested to learn of my experiences during my three months in Jerusalem and the West Bank and has taken up some of my concerns with the EU authorities."

"I found that MEPs work extremely hard in the European Parliament and are very receptive to the views of their UK constituents."
