Hugh Warner ()

Hugh Warner, Chair of Lichfield, Tamworth and Burton Lib Dems has written to all members today:

"I think that the result of the election on Thursday was very different from what we all imagined it would be on the day we heard it had been called. Despite having been cut out of the national media exposure for two years nationally we have increased the number of our MPs to twelve, but lost four of our existing MPs, including Nick Clegg. We now have four women MPs.

The Conservatives have progressed from five years of stability in coalition with us from 2010 to 2015 to a weak and divided government from 2015 to 2017 and now being propped up by the Democratic Unionists on a vote by vote basis by a secret backroom deal.

Locally, in our three seats, we had mixed results in spite of hard work by our three constituency campaign teams. We all worked very well together and put a positive message forward with leaflets, canvassing and internet.

Both nationally and locally we have to think through carefully how we go forward and get our message across more effectively.

Above all the Conservatives' Hard Brexit has been rejected and we as a party played a fundamental role here in exposing the dangers of these extreme plans.

We can feel very positive about the role the Lib Dems will be playing in the future locally and nationally.

I would like to thank Paul, Jenny and Dominic for putting themselves forward to be our candidates and for the time they have spent and the work they have done. They should now take a well deserved rest, as should all the helpers in Lichfield, Tamworth and Burton who also have our thanks.

Your Local Party Executive will now regroup and make plans in case we have a second general election."
