Angry residents present petition over lethal Lichfield junction

January 30, 2018 7:33 PM
Paul Ray, Liberal Democrat councillor for Chadsmead has been campaigning for a long-term solution to a very dangerous junction in Lichfield and has been presented with a petition from angry local residents. [see photo]
And only last week there was another serious accident at this junction. [see photos x2]
Paul Ray said
"The Eastern Avenue / Grange Lane junction in Lichfield is very dangerous with 3 or 4 serious accidents occurring here each year. I have seen the official accident statistics. And local residents are extremely concerned that a very serious / fatal accident will happen here unless a long-term solution is put in place. A roundabout is the obvious answer.
It must also be appreciated that this junction is very near a large 1000 student school (The Friary) which greatly adds to the risks and dangers here.
Last year I obtained a commitment from Staffordshire Highways that improved road markings/design would be made by March 2018. This has not happened yet but must happen by then.
But Staffordshire Highways must prioritise as a matter of urgency a long-term solution before it is too late. I fear that there will be very serious / fatal accident and I do not then want to read a subsequent report into that accident that recommends a long-term solution. THIS NEEDS ACTION NOW."
On receiving the petition Paul Ray added:
" Local residents are angry about the lack of action and are very concerned about the situation. They live by this junction and see on a day-to-day basis how dangerous it is.
It is plain to see that there is a treatable pattern of accidents and there is a clear remedial measure that could be taken to deal with this ie a roundabout. This must now be prioritised by Staffordshire Highways for funding.
I and local residents have been discussing this issue with Conservative Staffs County Council and Conservative County Councillor for Lichfield North, Natasha Pullen for some time now. But they are just not listening and not accepting that a long-term solution is needed to make this junction safe.
I will now be presenting this petition to Natasha Pullen and Staffs Highways and demand an answer about what they are going to do. Will they just let things carry on until there is a very serious or fatal accident? I and local residents will just not accept that."
Miles Trent of the Chadsmead Liberal Democrats added;
"This is just another example of the public paying the price of endless Conservative cuts. Enough is enough.
It's time to give the Conservatives a direct message that local people are appalled about how the Conservatives are dealing with our public services - and they must get the extra cash they desperately need."
