Liberal Democrat candidate for Crown ward by-election on June 7th 2018

May 20, 2018 9:50 AM

Michael PettingaleMichael Pettingale is to be the Liberal Democrat candidate for the by-election on June 7th. He lives locally and at the moment volunteers at Citizens Advice and works shifts at Uttoxeter Racecourse while training to become a lawyer.

Michael says: "The Liberal Democrats just enjoyed a promising set of local election results because of our reputation for hard-working and responsive councillors and the open and outward-looking approach we take to politics. This is the first time a Lib Dem has stood in Crown ward for very many years. On June 7th, I am asking if you would join with others switching their vote to the Liberal Democrats.

If elected, I would be focused on maintaining access to health services, working to keep the local area safe and finding sustainable ways to protect the environment.

A Safe Community

Chronic underinvestment in Staffordshire's roads has left many of them dangerous, not least the A515.

Flood protection in Marchington has to keep pace with any future development.

Access to Healthcare

The merger of Burton and Derby hospitals will go through this summer. Assurances about continuing services must be kept to.

With parking at Burton hospital as expensive as it is, good public transport links are important.

Lib Dems have a particular focus on mental healthcare. Access to services has been identified as being key for rural areas like Crown ward. In recent years, lack of funding has been an obstacle to getting people the help they need.

A Healthy Environment

Marchington Woodlands, the River Dove and the National Forest are all part of Crown ward. This rich natural environment should be celebrated.

In the last five years the amount of waste sent to be recycled has been dropping steadily, and it is now less than half. More can, and should, be done to promote recycling.

In the last year, on East Staffordshire Borough Council, one councillor has resigned for inaccurate statements and another
has left the Conservative Party amid reports of bullying. June 7th is your chance to send an unmistakable message.

No vote should be taken for granted. As well as running housing, planning and leisure the Borough Council is consulted on health, transport and environmental issues. I will speak up for Crown Ward residents not just follow a party line.
