The NHS and Social Care

Paul Ray, election candidate for Lichfield, writes:

How long do you have to wait to get a GP appointment in Lichfield?

Under this government the serous staff shortages across the two sectors arise from a perfect storm of insufficient money (NHS funding not keeping pace with population change and drastic cuts to social care funding), a hostile environment and falling value of the pound deterring much needed help from abroad and then the pension chaos forcing the most highly skilled to cut their hours.

Across England nearly 15% of A&E patients are waiting more than 4 hours in A&E against the target of 5%.

Within the NHS the particular plight of mental health services, the poor relation, is widely recognized.

Despite denials the trade negotiations with the USA may force enormous cost increases on the NHS from massive increase in drug costs.

Locally again we will need to watch carefully the plans for the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital.

At the national level, the Liberal Democrats asked for advice from an expert panel including the former chief executives of NHS England, the Royal College of Nursing and the Patients Association and were informed that the NHS in England needs a real terms funding increase of £4bn and further real terms increases of £2.5bn in each of the following two years.

The Conservatives and Labour are making wildly extravagant spending promises. In contrast the Lib Dems have sensibly costed plans to meet this uplift. We will put a penny in the pound on income tax and that will be ring fenced to help fund our NHS and care services. We recognise that tax increases are not always popular, but properly funding the NHS is absolutely vital to this country's future.
