13th Dec 2019 Lichfield Tamworth and Burton results

December 16, 2019 4:41 PM

Not good news for the Lib Dems nationally. Though the vote share rose from 7.4% to 11.5%, sadly the number of Lib Dem MPs fell by one, Jo Swinson's seat, compared to the situation after the 2017 election.

But locally the outcome was better. In Tamworth our vote share slightly increased, and more than doubled in Burton and Lichfield. In the latter Paul Ray's vote share rose to 10.8%.

Our members, supporters and helpers did great work. Almost half of the Lichfield members did something directly to help in the election and total helpers in Lichfield were over 100 people. This all bodes well in building for the future.

Now we have to see what sort of conjuror Boris Johnson proves to be. Is Brexit going to grow the economy and provide him with all those tax revenues he needs for his relatively parsimonious promises to end austerity? And leave something over to reward the left-behind he took from Labour? Will he get that deal, that very good deal, with the EU? Will the UK survive? What about the climate? How will the scene look after an extremely tough winter for the NHS?

If the conjuring fails we could be forgiven for saying we told you so. But we should be ready, in whatever way we can, to try to put the country together again.

Meanwhile a Big Thank You to our 3 wonderful candidates and to everyone who helped over the whole campaign
