What we were doing before the big shutdown
Liberal Democrats in Lichfield, Burton and Tamworth constituencies started the new year refreshed and determined to do better in future elections.
A well attended and lively members and supporters meeting in February discussed the recent General Election - both national and our own local campaigns.
The meeting was led by Lichfield Councillor and GE candidate Paul Ray and East Staffordshire (Burton) Councillor Helen Hall. All three constituencies had increased their share of the vote but there was much to learn for us all. Views on the national campaign were to be passed onto the National Party review panel set up to learn from the 2019 General Election and the months leading up to it.
A follow up meeting in March was held by the Lichfield & Burntwood Team to plan future campaigning leading up to the 2021 County Council elections and beyond. By that time the Tamworth team were busy preparing for May local elections and in Burton/East Staffs there was a local by-election campaign. Subsequently all the elections were cancelled! The Tamworth elections were cancelled legally. The East Staffs by-election (Eton Park Ward) had already started and our two candidates had delivered 3,000 leaflets when the returning officer stopped the election - technically illegally and after Government reassurances she would not be prosecuted..
In Lichfield wards of Chadsmead, Leomansley, St John's and Stowe wards and the Burton Ward in East Staffordshire were able to deliver over 13,000 local Focus leaflets from Lib Dem elected City and District councillors reporting back to local residents. A further Burntwood Focus leaflet had been designed and was ready to print when the shut down happened.
In Tamworth candidates had been lined up to stand and a residents survey leaflet designed ready or the campaign.
