Lichfield Lib Dems hail PM’s resignation

July 7, 2022 9:13 AM

LDC and LCC Councillor Paul Ray LCC LD Leader Paul McDermottFollowing the resignation of Prime Minister Johnson today, local Liberal Democrats commented on the national political scene.

"To be honest, it's a big relief," said Paul Ray, Lichfield District and City Councillor. "We seem to have spent the past three years or so listening to ever more improbable promises which we knew were never to be fulfilled. In addition, the constant U-turns and reversals have exposed the lack of honesty from the government, and it's been going on for far too long."

Paul McDermott, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Lichfield City Council, agrees. "When we go out and talk to people, we find that they're sick of the cycle of scandals and denials, followed by half-hearted insincere apologies. It's not about cake - it's about the lies about the cake."

Both expressed their disappointment that Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, had not expressed his disapproval of Mr Johnson and his evasions around "partygate", and condemned him for his messages on social media and TV supporting the Prime Minister, which Ray categorised as being "crass" and "ill-considered".

"It's disappointing, to say the least, that the majority of local Conservatives have not spoken out against Mr Fabricant and his continued support of a man who has lost the support, not only of the general public, but of so many of his Parliamentary colleagues," said Ray. "Ultimately, that can only result in a lack of trust in the local councils, where the Conservatives hold a majority. The Liberal Democrats offer alternative points of view, providing workable solutions, and working towards a fairer, greener, and more caring country. We are the change you've been looking for."
