Richard Henshaw

Richard Henshaw candidate for Stowe Ward in the Lichfield City Council By Election May 2021

I was born on 15 August 1947 in Northampton, and brought up and educated in Bristol. My father was a statistician and my mother a nurse, and my younger brother, John, was also a doctor! I studied Medicine at University of Leeds from 1965-1970, and then worked as a junior hospital doctor before GP training in Lichfield from 1974-1975. After that I then served in Mission Hospitals in Southern Africa with my wife, Judith, and our children from 1975-1992, a really transformative experience.
We returned to UK in1992, and I joined the Spires Practice in Lichfield and Burntwood as a partner, and served as a GP until retiring in 2017.
I am married to Judith, who was a nurse, and we have four children and three grand-children. Two live in Australia, one in France, and one in Sussex! So foreign travel is part of our life-style!
I am a Christian, worshipping at Holy Cross Catholic Church, and active in Churches Together.
In retirement, I serve as a trustee of Mary Slater Trust, Kendall & Wall Charity and Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire Charity, and am also a Foundation Governor of Ss.Peter & Paul School in Lichfield.
With my railway and canal enthusiasm I am also a member of Lichfield Rail Promotion Group and Lichfield & Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust, and before the Corona Virus pandemic, was involved in school mentoring and mock interview practise for older schoolchildren.
My hobbies still include medicine(addictive!), history, politics, walking and theology.
My politics have matured.I was a life-long Conservative, but am now a Liberal Democrat and am passionately European with a Christian Democrat focus on the common good and solidarity.
I believe that my experiences could be useful to the electors of Stowe Ward and am delighted to be able to stand as a Liberal Democrat candidate in the City Council by-election. If elected I would join a committed group of fellow Liberal Democrat councillors striving to improve our civic life.
