Burton Election reports
In a recent Burton Mail article the incumbent Tory election candidate, Kate Kniveton, referred to Burton’s successful levelling up bids in which she had played some part. And she offered more of the same with another £20 million to be spent over 10 years. She claimed local people would decide how best to spend this money – not the experience local people have had so far with levelling up monies!
The 3 progressive candidates were unimpressed. To Labour it was just another reckless, unfunded spending commitment. Sarah Murray, the Liberal Democrat candidate, wrote that the failed levelling up agenda “is purely a distraction from the wrecking ball the Conservatives have thrown at our economy over the last 14 years. Now that the general election is in full swing Rishi Sunak is suddenly able to find £20 million pounds for Burton-on-Trent. If elected I will focus on employment levels, transport links, poverty, health inequality and access to decent housing, all the issues affecting residents of Burton and Uttoxeter after years of Tory neglect”.
