Lib Dems take up District Council committee posts
At the Lichfield District Annual Council meeting on 14 May, Liberal Democrats Cllr John Smith and Hugh Ashton were elected to key committee positions. Cllr Smith takes on a role as Chair of the Member Standards Committee, and Cllr Ashton as Vice-Chair of the Planning Committee. The composition of all Committees was adjusted to better reflect the current composition of the Council, with the Conservative bloc being the largest single bloc, while failing to have an overall majority.
Cllr Smith says, “I am extremely honoured to be elected as Chair of this Committee, and I will take the responsibilities associated with it seriously, as demanded by the post.”
Cllr Ashton adds, “The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Planning Committee do not dictate planning policy nor do they seek to direct the decisions of the Committee. Ultimately, they act as referees, making sure that rules are observed, and that fair play is the order of the day. I will fulfil my duties as Vice-Chair supporting the Chair to the best of my ability.”
Cllr Paul Ray, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for the Lichfield constituency, and leader of the Liberal Democrats serving on the District Council, comments, “These appointments show that the change that residents voted for last year is starting to happen, following a year of adjustment to the new numbers. I am sure that these changes will be beneficial to the residents of the District as fresh ideas and ways of viewing issues are brought to the table. ̌Cllrs Hugh Ashton and John Smith demonstrate solid Liberal Democrat qualities, as they are level-headed and believe in fairness and working collaboratively with councillors of all parties. I know that they will be bringing these qualities to their new roles in the best interests of our community.”
