Sarah Murray at the Hanbury Hustings
Sarah Murray, our Liberal Democrat candidate in the Burton constituency joined 2 other candidates in a NFU hustings in Hanbury village on Monday night. The loudest and longest speaking candidate was James Bush for Reform. He started with a flat denial of climate change being man made, then invented a magic money tree, before proposing an outright ban on benefits for anyone who ‘refused’ to work. Kate Kniveton was emollient and reluctant to challenge any comments from the floor. As to all the excellent plans she said the Tories had for the future she could not explain why it had taken 14 years to reveal them. Sarah Murray was quietly competent, strongly valuing farmers (as indeed had all 3 candidates) but gently observing that everyone had an interest in land being used wisely. And that the public services which everyone valued (roads, health, education) needed money: improving these was incompatible with the all-round tax cuts proposed by the other two parties.
