Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Tamworth, Sunny Virk, has made creating a police station for Tamworth town centre and bringing back community policing a major focus in his campaign as figures show 71% of burglaries go unsolved in the County.
Sunny criticised the lack of visible policing in Tamworth town centre and if elected he has promised to directly approach the chief constable and Police and Crime Commissioner for the area about plans to open a new police station.
It comes as figures from official Home Office statistics, have shown that in 2022/2023, a total of 3,186 burglaries in Staffordshire were closed without a suspect being identified, accounting for 71% of all cases. Meanwhile, just 8% of Staffordshire’s burglaries resulted in a suspect being charged or summonsed.
The Lib Dems nationally have called for a return to proper community policing, where officers are trusted and visible in their neighbourhoods, with the time and resources to focus on tackling local crimes like burglaries. The party is also calling for a new “Burglary Response Guarantee” under which all domestic burglaries would be attended by the police and properly investigated.
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Tamworth, Sunny Virk said:
“I do not only pay lip service to being tough on crime as the Conservatives do, I am tough on crime.”
“There is a clear and present need for more visible policing in Tamworth Town Centre. If constituents give me the honour of making me their MP, I will be directly approaching the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner to put plans in place to open a police station in Tamworth Town Centre.
“The Conservatives have completely lost control of crime in our area. Their rhetoric rings hollow when it comes up against the facts. Conservative failings have once again let our community down.”
